MVLS History

Motor Vehicle License Systems (MVLS), established in 1974 and incorporated in the State of California in 1984, develops, designs, and manufactures custom, commemorative, souvenir and legal license plates.

Since its founding MVLS has designed and produced license plates and validation stickers for a wide variety of institutions, individuals and Government agencies. Our clients have included: the State of Mississippi, the State of California, the State of Oregon, the Statue of Liberty Centennial, the Province of Alberta, the U. S. Virgin Islands, the Canadian Olympic Association, the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee and more recently the Northwest Territories, the Governments of St. Maarten, Saba, St. Eustatius, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Lucia.

MVLS designs and develops programs for standard 6" X 12" license plates commonly used in the United States, Canada and Mexico. We work closely with government agencies to ensure that license plates comply strictly with existing law. We encourage the input of law enforcement officials to provide a workable tool for vehicle identification and public safety.

All license plates made by MVLS, for government use (legal plates), are produced in both Canada and the United States, as are our souvenir and novelty plates.

Since 1986, MVLS has been a member of the Olympic Family. Initially as a licensee with the Canadian Olympic Association and more recently as a sponsor of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee. MVLS has produced more Olympic license plates than any other company in the world. As a licensee with the Canadian Olympic Association we produced legal Olympic license plates, in cooperation with the Government of Alberta, for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. Since that time we have produced souvenir plates and offered Olympic Sponsor pins for every Olympic Games. In 1995, MVLS became a sponsor of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee. A contract with the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee was signed in 2000 to ensure a continued presence through the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter games in 2002. MVLS is also a licensee with the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee.

MVLS joined forces with Hi-Signs Manufacturing, Ltd., a leading manufacturer of license plates, in 1986, to work on the Calgary Olympic Winter Games project. Since 1974, Hi-Signs has produced more than 25 million license plates in Canada; including plates for the provinces of Alberta, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Yukon. MVLS and Hi-Signs continue to work together on several joint projects.

In 1995, MVLS became a sponsor of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee. We currently offer a special limited edition license plate, legal in the Virgin Islands and available to collectors worldwide commemorating the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games (2002). This is the fourth plate in the Olympic series offered by the Government of the Virgin Islands. These full color license plates utilize 3M precleared Scotchlite reflective material. The funds collected from the sale of these plates directly benefit the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee and the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee.

Olympic plates include Atlanta, Nagano, Sydney and Salt Lake
